Some of you will have seen people performing the slow-motion movements of the Tai chi forms, in parks, or in movies and although beautiful and captivating to watch, I bet you wondered what exactly was being achieved moving this way.

For some it develops some balance and coordination. It may improve ones concentration and increase a sense of wellbeing similar to a yoga practice or a meditation.

But the Tai chi practice can be so much more! …

If I were to say that, in a nutshell, Tai chi aims to teach you how to relax…you might think, “I know how relax, I do it every evening in front of the t.v.”

As Human beings we are hard wired to respond to stress with either “Fight or Flight” … it is how we evolved to stay alive since the beginning of time. When faced with a saber tooth tiger, this worked out well for us. The problem is that we don’t encounter tigers very often any more. Add to this the fact that the body cant tell the difference between reality and the thought of an event occurring and you have a stress response every time you think of that deadline or that argument that you had last week.

A few millennia ago someone found a another way to respond to stress. Based on the principles of Daoism and the Yin and Yang, they designed a system based on Harmonizing with the forces around them. They learned to yield to oncoming forces in such a way that empowered them and avoided conflict.

There are forces acting on us all the time! from the moment we wake up we are dealing with the force of gravity on us and this is one of the first thing we begin to learn to yield to and this allows gravity to empower us. We then learn to overcome our fight or flight basic impulses and learn to yield to forces from others. With this new found knowledge we transform how we interact with everyone we meet. It changes our relationships to our loved ones, our colleagues, our adversaries … and it changes us as human beings.

And along the way we get stronger ( stronger than you can imagine ) healthier, have better balance and poise and literally begin to transform.

  • It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world.
